Overview

Sildenafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the blood vessels of the penis, which may support increased blood flow during sexual stimulation. Sildenafil does not produce an erection on its own — sexual stimulation is required for the medication to work as intended.
